When mom Said Wait

Our daughter was fascinated with designing clothes. I got an idea off of Pinterest to make a dress form out of duct tape and helped her decorate her bedroom like a sewing shop. We arranged folded pieces of fabric along with patterns, we found at the thrift store, on shelves for display.

It was her 12th birthday. We gave her a sewing machine. She was over-the-moon excited and eager to use it. I helped her pick out a dress pattern and managed to find a piece of fabric big enough to fit the pattern pieces on. I was called away to do something and told her to wait for me to help her. She spread out the fabric on the living room floor and unfolded the pattern pieces. At last her excitement took over and instead of waiting for me she decided she could do it on her own. Taking the largest pattern piece she pinned it in the middle of the fabric and cut it out.

Now if you have done any sewing at all I’m sure you guessed what happened. When I returned to help her I found that the remaining pieces of fabric were too small for the other pattern pieces. It was a hard lesson, accompanied with tears of disappointment.

Whether it came from the thrift store or my mother’s sewing supplies I can’t remember but eventually a new piece of fabric was found and a dress was made.

My daughter came by this impatience honestly. I also have an exuberant personality. If I get an Idea I’m right on it. However when it comes to weightier matters, If I’m not careful, I can be in danger of running ahead of God. He patiently reminds me that He will be my leader and guide and to be led you must follow.

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope” Jeremiah 29:11 NLT

“The LORD says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” Psalm 32:8 NLT

“…I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is good for you and leads you along the paths you should follow. “ Isaiah 48:17 NLT

“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” James 1:5 NLT

These promises are gems, ones that I cherish. But for every promise that He will guide there are dozens upon dozens, like big yellow caution signs, not only encouraging but commanding us to wait! Why? Because God knows it is our human nature to run ahead of Him putting us in danger of ruining His perfect plan which could leave us crying with more than just a ruined piece of fabric.

“Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for him to act….” Psalm 37:7 NLT

“Wait patiently for the LORD. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the LORD.” Psalm 27:14
“…it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the LORD.” Limitations 3:26

“…In quietness and confidence is your strength…” Isaiah 30:15

May my prayer be as the Psalmist…

“Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you. Let me hear Your loving devotion in the morning, for I have put my trust in You. Teach me the way I should walk, for to You I lift up my soul.” Psalm 143:8 NLT

  1. I never had a good relationship with my mother and it happened at birth and she almost died! Yes she blamed me and in my teenage years she found places for me to live, this all worked out because I felt so loved by those who took me in but the relationship between my mother was broken. In 2004 I received healing in my heart for many things and one was for my mother, in 2011 the state contacted our family looking for someone to care for her and God nudged me forward, I gave up my job and everything I had worked for and moved back to take of her, during the last five years of her life. It was all God’s plan, healing and forgiveness and a chance to love my mom. Please know nothing is impossible for God.
